Open Windows Live Mail. Click on Tools, then - Options. In General check the box 'Automatically log on to Windows Live Messenger'. In the Messenger do the same - Tools - Options from General. Check both boxes in Sign In. In Alerts and Sounds check the first 3 boxes in Alerts.

It's very convenient. When you get a new e-mail in the taskbar, by the clock you'll receive an alert that you have new e-mail.

Now when you start Windows the Messenger window pops up and there you just click on your Hotmail.

I'm not too familliar with windows live mail, but if there's a shortcut icon, drag it and drop it into your startup folder on your start > all programs menu.

If not, check the options, more than likely, there will be an option to run the program on startup.

Somebody else may be able to answer this question in greater detail - just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.
