Blending:

To make the handle blend in with the blade, you've got to play with the light and shade of the entire object. So if the light is coming in from the right side for example, the light should be on the right side of both the blade and the handle.

Also, since the blade's handle is supposed to be over the blade, there should be just a bit of shadow between them to make it more realistic.

Change of Design:

There are different ways to do this but I'll choose the easiest to explain on here. Use the polygonal lasso tool to outline the polygon shape. Create a new layer and add color to this polygon shape. Use the gradient effect (similar colour to the one you're trying to replace). And then place this layer on top. You can place the new symbol on top of this layer.

OR

Use the Free Transform tool to clear off the current symbol. And then use Spot Healing Brush Tool to even out the gradient.

Adobe PSD is a lossless format used suitable for heavy editing. You should always keep a lossless original. If you want to use an image for web work, you should either File --> Save As...this will bring up a box, select the format you want to use, so gif or jpg or something. If you can't select it from this menu (which can happen in CS4), you need to do File --> Export For Web this should allow you detailed settings for conversion of PSD to web formats.

You could use Blur (R) and try blurring the symbol with the blade.

If you're just trying to replace the symbol with another symbol (change the design?), select the border of the connecting piece and blur or paint the inside, then you will have a blank region to put something else in.
