Question:
How do I fix this problem with my Ubuntu desktop/menus?

Seemingly at random, my computer likes to remove the graphics from any icons I have on my desktop and all the colour and graphics from the menus (Home, documents etc.) They always both happen at the same time so they're obviously linked. I have tried logging out and logging into the guest account and it works perfectly, but when I re-log in to my account again the problem persists. I am kinda new to Ubuntu, so hopefully someone with a little more knowledge than me can help me out. If needed, I can e-mail a snapshot of my desktop and home folder (I don't think you can add photos to a question, please correct me if I am wrong.) Thanks :D

I get that with the bookmarks icons. My desktop icons are stable.

I'm running 10.04LTS so this may not be where your problem is, it worked for my install:

In "System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects" click the "Normal" radio-button.

If it's already in "Normal", click "None". Restart. Then as above. Then restart. (check to see if it's still as selected.)

If this doesn't help, in a terminal (Applications - Accessories- Terminal) type (copy'n'paste this string):

sudo killall gnome-panel && sudo reboot

It will ask for your password, type it CAREFULLY as it doesn't appear on-screen

then hit return & wait while it reboots.

If this doesn't solve the problem, ask on the help forums, giving your set-up details in the question, e.g.

Ubuntu & hardware details, as exact & concise a description of the problem as possible, any common factors such as the app your using, or how many apps, starting or stopping services, etc. You can post screenshots to the forums as well.

I've just had a look on the forums, but without knowing which distro of Ubuntu your running, it's difficult to offer much more advise. Try what I've suggested, just to eliminate anything simple.

I just switched from Ubuntu to Debian because of the Unity thing. I also didn't care for gnome3 (although it's better than unity). Debian Stable is just that... stable. Hopefully by the time gnome3 gets added to Debian Stable, all the kinks will be worked out.

It would be that your quantity grasp manage would have come what may gotten muted. I do not use Linux so im no longer one hundred% definite, however its valued at a verify. You can get to it out of your manage panel, i consider, or close the backside correct of your track there must be a few form of speaker image or anything.

I hate Ubuntu. Personally, I would choose Kubuntu or openSUSE. They use a desktop called KDE which is somewhat less cack-handed to get around.

Don't expect to get things like this in KDE. Unity (the UI you are using now) is quite new and unstable, while KDE has had time to mature.
