My computer (Windows XP) is getting the BSOD error "Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternative."

Basically, the only solution I have found is to completely replace Windows XP. However, the disk drive is also failing and thus I cannot boot from the disk. This is also my only Desktop PC, so I cannot write the disk onto a floppy.

I can access the "Sorry for the inconvenience, but Windows failed to load" and I can access the F8 menu. Does anybody have any ideas of how to remedy this problem?

This is caused by a corrupted registry file.  Microsoft's Knowledge Base has an article that describes how to fix this -- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

In most cases, the build up of junk files in your registry is the main culprit of this trouble; this is due to the fact that area in your computer is very crucial because it is the central database of important files where most vital information and programs are stored. The accumulation of redundant items can significantly affect vital data because the build up can dislodge some of them from its proper location and cause others to be corrupted. The moment this scenario takes place, problems start to emerge and the dreaded blue screen of death appear which you need to immediately repair to prevent worsening the case.Consequently, one of the best solutions in managing the situation is to use registry cleaning tools http://clean-computer-run-quickly.com with great power and capacity to completely flush out all junk files and fix all errors found. Reboot PC and press the F8 key a couple of times before the Windows screen appears. Enter Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking if you need network access) and download MalwareBytes from google ,Install it, update, and run a full system scan. Remove everything it finds. Next, run a full antivirus scan with something like Microsoft Security Essentials .Auslogics disk defrag and Auslogics registry cleaner are very good and fast to keep you clean and running good .all are free ,just google them.

try replacing your HD with one that already has Windows on it and then starting your computer.
