Short answer:

Ubuntu

Long answer:

Ubuntu doesn't have the many memory leaks (the OS deallocates resources after it closes a program, it not all the resources are deallocated then you have a memory leak, over time this will slow down your machine and force you to reboot) that Windows has as each application is run in isolation from each other and when they close, the resources are returned to the OS (Ubuntu inherited this from Unix).

I find 99% of the time that Ubuntu boots faster, and runs applications faster then on Windows. The only exception to this are applications that are integrated into the OS on Windows (like IE).

This gets me into security, because applications are not integrated into the OS and there is no root/admin account on Ubuntu, it is inherently more secure then Windows (not to mention their are far fewer viruses and malware for Linux then Windows).

I find Ubuntu to be more user friendly then Windows and I find that brand new users to computers can pick up Ubuntu faster then Windows, but since Windows has had greater then 90% market share of all desktop computers since 1995, more people are familiar with Windows and as such will find Windows more user friendly.

I strongly recommend that you download the Ubuntu LiveCD. The LiveCD will allow you to try Ubuntu without having to install it on your machine. Since the LiveCD is free (just costs you 1 CD) you have nothing to lose by trying it out. Some things to watch out for though is that you will not be able to run Windows applications on Ubuntu so you will no longer be able to buy the latest games for you computer if you switch over. There are games for Linux ( http://gaming.gwos.org/doku.php/guides:64bit ) though.

If you are a gamer, Linux is not a very good choice, it still has a ways to go before it reaches that goal, but getting closer all the time. If you like Every type of graphical programs you can down load and use it falls short also. So whats the point? I never reload, I never get Blue Screens, I don't have spyware, virus and trojans to deal with all the time, it has plenty of programs that suit what I do with computers and updates are easy and don't take hours to accomplish. All my drivers are installed and the system is setup according to what my computer has, I don't have to make those decisions or look for drivers of any kind. I prefer a Linux that has the Windows Looking Desktop Environment. Kubuntu might be a choice, however I use PCLinuxOS 2009-1 with the KDE Desktop. I dual boot all the computers in my house with Windows and Linux as my operating system. I have the best of both systems and would have it no other way. By the way only four files installed in Windows XP can make it stable, safe and, secure.

Hi, There

Well I think none of this OSs can complete all your requirements:

For me the best OS is Ubuntu, but it is a bit harder to make it run as you want. I have learned a lot from the forums and free e-books. The benefits of this system are:

Free of charge (very important);

Open Source Code (mean you can change everything you want on the programs;

No viruses (there are no known viruses for Linux, and the security software is updated very frequently);

For the last couple of years this OS become very popular and many companies begin to make software for it. I hope that open source can save the PC World.

Windows on the other hand is the most popular as you know and has the biggest number of applications of all other OSs.Benefits of this operation systems are:

Many Programs

I think this is the only benefit of this OS except that you can by it everywhere.If I begin to write all minuses of Windows I would be shut down from Y!Answers for too much content.If you continue using Windows I think that new version Windows 7 could make change in our views about this system.

I think I answered to some of your questions.

Why don't you reformat your hard drive and reinstall Windows, but this time create 2 accounts, one Administrator and one Limited User.

Only use the Administrator account to install/remove software and update the system. Be sure to scan everything you plan to install before you install it.

For everything else use the Limited User account, this will prevent the automatic installation of malware because it won't have permission to install itself.

If you want to go the Linux route, then I recommend that you download Ubuntu, burn the image to a disc, and play with the OS using the LiveCD to familiarize yourself with it.

Read some of the Documentation for Ubuntu to help you understand the basics and what you are getting into.

Ubuntu is defiantly more secure, faster and more stable. Also, unix permissions make is hard for virus' to run on a linux/unix machine.

Although I'd probably have to say that Windows is more user friendly (although linux is generally more developer friendly).

Hope this helps =).

Ubuntu is not user friendly and you cannot run windows programs on it.

Their applications are free of course, but many of the them do not come with instructions on how to use them correctly. Performance wise it is the best. The best advice is stay with windows and upgrade your machine. And invest in security software.

A lot of people have been chattering about the improvements Windows 7 brings for Windows users, but how does it compare to Ubuntu in real-world tests? We put Ubuntu 8.10, Windows Vista and Windows 7 through their paces in both 32-bit and 64-bit tests to see just how well Ubuntu faces the new contender. And, just for luck, we threw in a few tests using Jaunty Jackalope with ext4.

Ubuntu is faster and more stable but anything but user friendly.If you protect and maintain windows there is nothing wrong with it.
