windows movie maker is only compatible with wmv video file

you need to convert your avi and mpeg to wmv video format

i often use Bigasoft WMV Converter to convert my flv, avi to wmv and it works well

as i know it even can convert AVI, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, MOV, RM, 3GP, VOB, VCD, DV, MP4 (MPEG-4) to wmv

hope it helps

convert the AVI and MPEG files to WMV and try again.

Most of time the Windows Movie Maker does not support AVI and MPEG files.

The AVI and MPEG codecs are not readable my Movie Maker.

Sure, Movie Maker can understand AVI and some MPEG, but "codecs" are the "different flavours" of these file types.

Try to convert these to different codecs with a downloaded online video converter.

Your computer may miss the code, download and install K-lite code pack may fix the problem.

Or you can convert the avi and mpeg video to wmv video, I know windows movie maker supports wmv video better than avi and mpeg. If you don't know how to convert video, I think this step by step direction would help you a lot
