The last good free video editor was Avid Free DV, which is now discontinued.

Until something pops up in the Open Source movement, there isn't a free editor that will do what you want. (And believe me I have looked around.) The existing free options like Avidemux and VirtualDub don't have fancy features, and are just meant for conversion or simple linear editing.

If you have $100 lying around, definitely spring for Adobe Premiere Elements or Sony Vegas, which is what most people use when WMM doesn't cut it.

Actually the latest beta release of the Windows Live Movie Maker works perfectly on the Windows 7. Trust me, the Windows Live Movie Maker is the BEST FREE Software out there, although it doesn't have all the SUPER COOL features as you want but it does the job for FREE ;)

I highly recommend that you install the latest beta release on AUG 17 2010 from here: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta

Plus, to know more about how to work on the WLMM, I suggest that you watch WLMM tutorials on http://youtube.com/LiveMovieMaker

I really suggest you give it another try, because a lot of NEW features got added to the WLMM like:

1. Webcam capture

2. Video speed up

3. Video Slow motion

4. Publish to Flickr

5. Edit High Definition video files

6. Publish 1080p to YouTube

7. Take a snapshot from video clips

8. New Automovie Themes (1-click)

I'd like to recommend AVS Video Editor to you, I always use it to edit video and make funny video for uploading to Youtube, it's easy to use and the quality is awesome, you can crop, cut, join, edit video with it easily. It also embeds many special effects, you can even add text to video or add background music, that's pretty cool. It worth a try

Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question

Well... only thing "Free" is what Microsoft gives you. Sony Vegas is your best bet, not free. If you want free you already have it. Anything else is going to cost you... unless you get a cracked copy... but I can't help you there, got my last answers account banned for it.
