Yeah. The other answers pretty much covered it. Java uses an intelligent method of running off a virtual machine which is platform dependent in exchange for a slight speed drop. The java language communicates with the VM, and every VM can translate java code into machine code which is then translated into however the particular OS reads it and sent to the computer.

what kind of firefox is it? coz i'm using iceweasel.
look into /usr/lib/*firefox_derivative*/plugins if it has everything that is in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins (symlinked).
i'm using package sun-java6-plugin and it's .so file is located in /etc/alternatives/.
ps: i'm using debian.

Okay, yeah.. The fox changed its mechanisms for using openJRE and openJDK as of 3.6 (the bastages!) You have a couple options:
1) You can use the actual SUN java plugins which will indeed work.
2) You can upgrade to bleeding edge Fedora 13 which has the plugins fixed.
3) You can Eff around on google for the next two days trying figure out how to stick a square peg in a round hole.

su or sudo yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin
i run mandriva and i don't have java enabled, don't need it
no point in asking on the ubuntu forums as fedora uses a different package manager
