Now it always asks me to enter my 25-character product key. Does this mean I have to buy it? I'd truly rather not spend those outrageous prices on microsoft's website for microsoft word and I HATE OpenOffice.org

If you don't have a product key then yes, you are at the end of the trial period for it, so if you want to keep using it, you need to buy it (which will include a product key).

It's too bad that you hate OpenOffice, because that's the best choice for people who can't afford Microsoft Office or don't want to use it on principle.

P.S. The prices for Word on Microsoft's website are going to be more than anywhere else. To see better prices, go to www.google.com and search for "microsoft word" and then click "Shopping" on the left. Remember that many of the lowest prices will be for either older versions or student versions. If you're in school you probably can qualify for the student version.

I am afraid you don't have too many alternatives. Either you buy the full version, or go to Features and Programs and uninstall the MS Office.

In case you have problem uninstalling it, here is a tutorial from Microsoft Support. It consists of " Fix it for me " applications for each version, 2003, 2007, and 2010. Make sure you pick the right one.

If you're a student, you can buy the student edition at most stores and online for a fraction of the cost. I believe Microsoft also offers a free Word reader, though it won't allow you to edit documents.

Bill Gates does not provide his Office OR Windows software for free. How do you think he became a billionaire?

As the others have mentioned, you have to buy the software if you want to use it. Or you'll have to use Open Office.

If you buy the student version of the software it is not that expensive (relatively speaking of course).
