Question:
Can you help with my codec problem?

I appear to have an odd codec problem.

I am helping my boss with his office computer (small business) with a fresh install of XP after a HD failure.

We are able to play movies from his P&S camera without a special codec (AVI), but not from his GF's camera (MP4). Also, we are not able to view FLV's without an additional codec.

We have tried:
K-Lite Codec 5.0.5 FULL
K-Lite Codec 5.0.5 MEGA Pack
K-Lite Codec 4.8 (to try an older version)
FFDShow latest build.

The K-Lite codecs work to enable viewing of MP4 and FLV, but there is some type of problem.

FLV's show all in green, like it is black and white, but not black, green and white monochrome.
MP4's show with heavy distorted purple vertical lines and bizarre colors.
Regular AVI's now play with horrendous distorted purple vertical lines.

I used the tweak tool to remove the ffdshow directshow filter and it appears to be the culprit.

Disabled, things return to normal, with normal viewing of AVI's, but unable to view MP4's and FLV's.

I'm no codec expert, but I'm not exactly a newbie to computers and after more than an hour, I'm no farther ahead.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I think that you might be in need of the DivX codec. You can get it here:

K-lite Codec Pack is the solution if you have any problem with codec. You can download it for free here http://j.mp/1kl9Aes

If you are unable to watch video or you can't open any files (avi, mp4, divx, etc...) it's very likely that your computer doesn't have right codecs. You need to install K-lite Codec Pack to fix the issue.

I use FFDShow combined with Media Player Classic (not to be confused with Windows Media Player, lol). Almost always works for just about ANY format.

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/

Note: You may have to train Windows to force open whatever file format you're trying to open by using the "Open With" right-click context menu.

Good luck!
