how do i reduce wuauclt.exe , svchost.exe and vsserv.exe high memory usage?

Only recently i found that my PC started slowing down really badly. Programs and even folders started freezing when i was using them, and even the mouse freezes for short amounts of time. I've looked at task manager often since the problem began and found the same 3 processes running with high memory usage [from just over 100,000K peaking so far to about 325,000K] whenever the computer starts running slow. One strange thing is that the computer doesn't run slow all the time, and most of the time only 1 of the processes is using high memory.

I've tried to search for answers for each of the processes and i know know that vsserv.exe is related to my antivirus BitDefender, but since they've all only started playing up recently I'm keen to know what's happened and how i can reduce the high memory usage. Right now wuauclt is rising up from 270,000K and svchost is sticking at around 125,000K.

wuauclt.exe and one copy of svchost.exe tend to bulge (possibly alternating) when Windows is scanning for Windows/Microsoft updates to apply. You COULD turn that off, but then you should remember to hit http://updates.microsoft.com around the second Wednesday of the month to see what Microsoft has released.

So wait and watch. And Please DO NOT mess with the window registry. You will land up in greater problem if you do so.
