It is amazing that Ubuntu the linux for the poors in the eyes of many doesnt include the NECESSARY proprietary drivers to connect to a wifi card. As someone suggested you may add the repository but that implies you move the computer to an ethernet base conextion. Not the most practical indeed. There are much better linux arounds but if you want to stick to ubuntu yes add the repository.

Ubuntu has madwifi in the repositories in the software management program. I do not understand those who use the terminal commands for existing software. Any way there is more software in the software management program than most people will realize. I have never had to use the terminal command for any computer that I have installed Linux on. If you are running dual boot with windows, you can also install the NDIS files so Linux can use the windows drivers.

Looks like that WAS a known issue with that particular card, but drivers have been included since 9.04.

Take a look at this

Pretty simple fix, but I doubt it's your problem. Have you plugged this thing in and updated it? It may fix itself. Also, I'd download the 32bit version, boot it up live and see if your wireless works. There's a reason many people run the 32bit version. I've run both and there's really no noticeable difference. I'm sure you noticed when you DL'd Ubuntu it said (Recommended) next to the 32bit version. There's a reason for that unfortunately.

1. Without the full error messages, it is difficult to see the problem

2. Asking on a Ubuntu forum is probably a better idea

3. If I had to guess, you probably don't have the right version of your kernel's source -- but there are other reasons things can fail.

Please look into my source there are two links and you need to do a little bit of reading.
