Windows 7 is easier than Ubuntu or Linux Mint??? -you gotta be kidding!!! Windows 7 may be more user friendly than Windows Vista......I'll agree to that. If you will be running games...then Windows 7, or XP. If you do not specifically "need" Windows, then Linux mint 9 is fantastic, Mint 8 is great. Any of the 10.04 'buntu's are great- Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu.
Linux Mint 11

Windows applications cannot run natively on Linux. WINE http://www.winehq.org/ indeed can be used in some cases but by no means all and should only be used once all other native options have been exhausted.

There is a whole wealth of native open source alternatives available in the Synaptic Package Manager https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto (Applicable to Linux Mint as well). For Example :

Photoshop there is GIMP http://www.gimp.org/features/

Office there is OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/

WMP there is MPlayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/info.html

iTunes there is Rhythmbox http://www.gnome.org/projects/rhythmbox/

I recommend Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna (Main Edition) as it is easy to install and use, and comes with much of the software you are likely to use preinstalled. You can download the Linux Mint 4.0 ISO image from http://linuxmint.com/download.html All you need to do then is create a bootable CD. Here is a detailed list of software include and tutorial on the installation of Linux Mint 4.0 http://www.howtoforge.com/desktop-installation-guide-linux-mint-4.0-daryna

Alternatively you could install Ubuntu 8.04.1 within windows using the Wubi installer.

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi http://wubi-installer.org/ only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application. To find out how Wubi installer works https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

Ubuntu is awesome but it might be better to try Mandriva 2009 as their latest distro just shipped last week. You can have the newest KDE4.1 or Gnome or Xfce (which is lightweight)

You can check for compatibility issues on the various wine spin-offs sites. I believe i was office 2003 but not 2007 on the list but open office is improved even just recently and has more to offer as Linux becomes more popular.

You are the boss when you can access the terminal and tell your laptop what you want it to do. You can modify scripts very easily and learning some development skills are just around the corner if you feel like it.

The community is really helpful when you have problems and there some great IRC channels for round-the-clock help (this is if you like to do more than point and click not for the 'blue screen of death' type problems you get with windows.

You can download Ubuntu (Gnome) or Kubuntu (KDE) Burn it to a DVD and run it with out installing it.

There are Linux equivalents to Microsoft programs buy you cannot run most Windows program on a Linux OS.

Gnome and KDE are the windows portion of Linux with you can have both with any Linux . I had Fedora and Suse in the past but prefer Kubuntu for Linux.

Linux is better for security.

On my Vista laptop I have Vista, and Xubuntu but switching that back to the normal Ubuntu. I like both of them very much but if you can't stand Vista downgrade to XP if you can't install Ubuntu.

I have the vista and i am not having any problems with it at all. Try running spyware programs! You might have some that got installed on your PC w.o you knowing and that is what is taking up a lot of your memory...

I would say Windows Vista, for the power users...

they switch to Linux Ubuntu, or Linux Fedora

But I am more of a Windows User.

I would stick with Windows.

The reason that can be very close to your problem is because you may have a virus on it.

Sure you might think and say, "Oh, I didn't click on any weird looking picture or ad." Well people are master minds and can hack a virus into your computer.

The guy who created Windows is a billionaire!

He is the richest guy in the world.

He is richer than the King's and Queen's in this world!

He is the founder!

Stick with Windows.

Everyone is using it.

Good Luck!

linux ubuntu. fedora is ok, but ubuntu rocks.

wine can run many windows applications, but not all (there's a compatibility list on the site).

if you run linux, you will avoid internet explorer, the worst browser ever shipped (you should install e.g. firefox on windows, even in the case you decide to keep windows, and "trash" virtually IE).

you don't need microsoft office suite on windows, since there's openoffice, so you don't need them on linux too

(and rememeber, if you do not want compatibility issues also with other versions of microsoft office, do not use docx and other -x formats of the last ms office suite)

for the "etc" programs, you can check wine

http://www.winehq.org/

if you will try ubuntu, maybe you can read

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Wine

security is surely better on "linux" systems than windows system (no matter how may and good spywares, antivirus and so on you install for windows...). about speed, maybe linux will go faster, but a clean windows won't run so slower
