If I m on the desktop, or in My Documents, I get a "access Denied" message. I m on winXP SP2.

Using Wordpad to modify basic .txt files has always been preferrable to me, and I REFUSE to install a notepad replacement program because I want the stock notepad.

What can I do to rectify this? Besides full re-installation, which I REALLY don t want to do, soley for the long process of backing my files (which are a lot) to another computer. That always takes me a full week to do...

I'm on an older eMachine, sp3 Windows XP always, ALWAYS gives me trouble so I stay with sp2.

I hate any OS post Windows XP because they are severely limiting and difficult to work with. XP has given me the best performance and ease of use compared to the newer OS', and I own a laptop with Windows 8 on it, but for what I do with video games, I need my XP machine because the laptop wont let me do anything on it. AS ADMINISTRATOR.

This is the message I get when I try to open a .txt file (by double left-clicking) with Wordpad.

"Access to C://DOCUME~2 was denied."

It closes after I hit okay.

The files aren't corrupted, because if I right-click and open with notepad, I can view the file. I prefer wordpad to view .txt files because of the lineup of characters in the display stays center in the screen which makes modifying game xmls and other files so much easier.

EDIT: I fixed it. Did some digging in the registry file types, and saw the file ext "text". I renamed a .txt file to .text and wordpad opened it with no problems. The (default) string in .text had a value "text_auto_file". I copied that and put it in the .txt (default) string's value, which was "txtfile". So the problem was a registry value that prevented WordPad from recognizing .txt files.

Thanks anways.

Windows XP SP2 is no longer supported. It is very old and ancient and insecure. You should upgrade to a supported version of the operting system as soon as possible.

You will see "Access Denied" warning when you got no permission from your administrator ! if YOU are the administrator you have to find wordpad.exe (I think its in ..windows..system32) I realy dont know where it is but you can also right click on word pad's shortcut in startmenu and click Properties. and then -I Think- Open location.. when you found wordpad.exe... right click and hold down SHIFT (right) key and right click ! then >> Run as.. >> administrator ! (I think you will have no more problem with it
