My preferred way is using "downloadhelper" extension in Firefox. it has quite lot of feature and u can download video from almost all the sites and convert them to ur required format.

video downloadhelper won't fix your problem with embeded videos just streaming videos. i use a prog called ashampoo snap. it takes a bit getting used too but will do the job
