I bet it is an upgrade. So you need some valid software to upgrade from. This could be an old version of Office to a copy of MS Works. You should not have to install one of these, just having the install disk should be enough. So go try and find the disks from your old laptop and then try to reinstall ...keeping your eye out for upgrade questions.

Sounds to me like you have the upgrade for Office Suite instead the much more expensive full-blown version. I have two solutions.
1. You can download the FREE OpenOffice.org OpenOffice and continue to use everything Office, including the MS files created by MSOffice, PowerPoint, Excel.
or
2. (This used to work for the Office97) Drag any folder from the upgrade CD into a newly-created MSOffice folder on the laptop hard Drive. Then when the install process looks for "qualifying product" it accepts you are upgrading.
Likewise, if you have Office2000, you can install it and then upgrade.

It sounds like you have the upgrade version of the software, not the new installation version. It is looking for the previous version office - like office 2000.

sounds like you didn't pay for that one, or it's invalid. go to the windows verification website for possible solutions.
