Everytime I download anything I make sure it goes to my desktop. Once the download has finished it automatically deletes itself from the computer. No trace is found when a search of whole computer is done. Is there anyway I can fix this please with in the settings anywhere? Thanks

i have windows vista and it does not do that to me.......i have a new model.....depends on where you got it but you might have to let them take it out and then reload it with a new windows vista program.......i know i had to this and i had to track down where i had bought online games.....and lost several pictures and many things i did not think it would erase........i am just thankful mine is running ok again person can spend a lot of money on computers...having people work on it and not even know what they are really doing and makes things worse after all the money i have gave them.rent to own is not cheap but it is lot easier to have them come out and find what is wrong with it until you get it paid off........

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner

Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.

To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:

Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.

Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.

afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.

The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.

If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)

The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).

Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.

Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

I have VISTA .. had problems at first , they are steadily working out the bugs.. make sure you have your computer set to do all the automatic updates.. instead of downloading them to desktop top try downloading the stuff to "documents" I never had any problems with downloads, but I did have some problems with a few older games that were developed and sold before Vista.. also when I had dial up my vista was the pits.. now with high speed cable Internet I have had any problems with Vista.. it is most important to have your computer set to automatically download all updates

You don't say if you have upgraded to Vista or if you bought a computer with Vista already installed.

There are still some programs that will not run on Vista, but all are slowly catching up. You will need to be more specific about where you want to save a download. Also if you upgraded from XP you will probably have several drivers which will need to be replaced. Don't give up, I know it is frustrating, but Vista is worth it! Mine performs much faster, one does not have to go through all the clicks as on XP. Love Media Player , it is awesome. Good luck!!

Are you sure that you have icons turned on on your desktop? There should be an option of turning them on/off when you right click on the desktop. Also are you selecting download and not open/run when you click on the link? And if your computer was designed for Vista, and you don't play games, then it isn't a problem at all..

I suggest you to use Internet Download Manager. It's compatible with Vista . IDM allows users to automatically download certain file types, divides downloads into multiple streams for faster downloading and lists recent downloads for easy access to files. Its algorithm includes dynamic segmentation throughout the downloading process, which sets it apart from many other download managers. IDM contains no ads or spyware, and works with Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape Navigator, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox. You can download it for free at : www.phazeddl.com

In your "My Documents Folder" create a folder labeled "My Download Files"...then go to that folder when downloading files then create a separate folder inside your "My Download Files" folder for each download to remind you of what that file really is IE; CCleaner.exe, Zone Alarm.exe, etc. (and since I think you use Mozilla Firefox as a browser, reset the default folder in the following way to "My Download Files" folder).

In Mozilla Firefox, click on Tools>Options>Main Tab>Downloads Section>put dot in Download Files To: And click Browse button to browse to C:\Documents and Settings\"your specific user name will be here"\My Documents\My Download Files

Once the file downloads, simply go to the "My Downloads" file folder and drag and drop the downloaded file into its respective folder. Then enter that folder & install as necessary the required downloaded program.

I never ever download to My Desktop. Keep your file tree clean create plenty of folders and you'll know exactly where everything is...and how to find it later.

As an example, using "Windows Explorer" or "My Computer" icons which are both on my desktop and in quick start, the path to my CCleaner.exe's install file is;

C:\Documents and Settings\"my specific user name is here"\My Documents\My Download Files\XPSetupFiles 8-25-05\CCleaner.exe.

And there are 18 different versions of that file in that folder from version ccsetup128.exe~the latest issue ccsetup203.exe, and I have over 200 folders located in XPSetupFiles 8-25-05 but all are in alphabetical order. But I can find any of about 4,000 or more downloaded files in a flash.

Same thing w/ downloaded hardware drivers....In that "My Download Files" folder is a file simply labeled "Soyo SY-P4I 845PE Version1.0 Drivers" then went to my mobo mfg. site, downloaded each driver avail. for that mobo into it's own folder, then burned a driver CD for my motherboard...should the drivers list ever disappear, I have them. If I sold the mobo, that CD w/ the updated drivers along w/the manual would be in the original box w/ all the hardware. All other hardware drivers are in another folder labeled "Other Hardware Drivers", and "Printer Drivers" is in another folder.

It isn't a Vista situation folks, it is a Windows situation...all your personal docs, pics and downloads should be in your "My Documents" folder. That way the partial tree contains them, and burning/backing up is a single folder click operation. Just save "My Documents" and it is all there.

1 more thing, don't "get rid of Vista"...Vista, just like XP allows dual booting through the NT Bootloader...just get XP Pro or Home, partition your drive (at least 40 GB please but can be as small as 25~30 GB), then install XP, install your programs and use XP and UPDATE IT VIA WIN/MS Updates till Vista is truly ready for prime time and SP's have fully been released. Then go back to Vista....But then you have access to the whole file tree using Windows Explorer and you have both OS's to use. Drive total space should be at least 80GB or higher, Vista takes 40GB fully patched though that will grow w/ future SP's and patches, XP takes at least 20 right now fully patched=60GB's plus at least 20GB or more for data. Pick your poison at the link below. Step by step directions are there. I build multiple boot machines. Mine alone has 7 operating systems on it.

Good Luck!

Not sure what browser you are using, but I use FireFox. It is far superior to IE, and not so prone to hacks. Anyways, when you download something in FireFox it has a little bar at the bottom of your browser and you can access the file right there. Not sure why you files are getting deleted? Have you tried looking in the recycle bin to see if they are there?
