Is there a good free program out there that will let me input an .avi file and re-encode it at a custom file size? For instance, if I wanted to reduce a 900mb .avi to 700mb in order for it to fit on a single CD-R, or any other large file to a custom smaller file size of my choice. I don't mind if I lose a some quality in the process, as I'm sure I would. Thanks!

ok....I use Nero for things like this, and it's not free, but its REAL GOOD....I think DVDFABplatinum would be your best bet, but once again, not too sure if it's free...

For Free encoders you could try here:

USE CAN LOWER A FILE SIZE ON ALMOST ANY VIDEO CONVERTER, AND IN THE LINK BELOW IS A GOOD FREE ONE. WHEN YOU ARE CONVERTING IT YOU SHOULD LOWER THE VIDEO BITRATE. THE VIDEO BITRATE DETERMINES THE QUALITY OF THE PICTURE AND THE HIGHER THE QUALITY THE BIGGER THE FILE SIZE. YOU WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO TWINK THE VIDEO BITRATE A COUPLE TIMES TO GET THE RIGHT SIZE. AND TO MAKE SURE YOU STILL HAVE THE BEST QUALITY POSSIBLE AFTER YOU LOWER THE BITRATE WELL OF CHANGE THE OUTPUT TYPE TO CUSTOMIZED AVI AND THE VIDEO CODEC TO XVID.

those compressions are DVD ripped. you may continuously rip your 4.30 gb DVD to seven hundred Mb and nonetheless get a sturdy high quality. WINRAR and WINZIP would not help in any respect in this compression. they might compressed by technique of two to 4 mb lesser that is all. even if the benefits with Winrar and Winzip is that you'll wreck the document to many aspects...... you may attempt to commence you rip with nero.....Nero comes with ripping determination.
