This is a problem I have encountered A LOT!!! A quick fix for the problem and something I would suggest doing first is inserting your Windows XP install cd and going to the recovery console(Press R at the first prompt screen). If it asks for the Administrator password just hit enter, unless you put one on there. Then type this: chkdsk C: /R this will go through and check and fix errors in your files. I suggest this first because the other problems could be hardware failing. It could be your power supply going out, I had a friends computer that would lock up and/or restart randomly. These are replaceable, but i would suggest getting a technician to do it, or a geeky friend. I've built multiple systems, but the first one I built, had a failing AGP controller(video) and would cause my computer to restart randomly, and my computer would fail to load on many occasions. This would mean its the motherboard, buy a new computer. Or it could be your memory though most times you would get a BSOD (Blue screen of Death) First. Hope this helps!

Mine does that also. Usually because it is overheating. Try some basic maintenance, virus scans, and defraging making sure in the control panel>programs that there is nothing there that should not be there. If none of that does the trick, then it is likely overheating. Give it a break by shutting down for a while. Have the fan checked. If it is a desk top this is easy and replaceable, if it is a laptop, it would be cheaper to get a new laptop.
