"Microsoft Office" is a suite of programs which contains Microsoft Word. If you only need a word processor then your Vaio will be fine. But as a college student you may need programs like Excel and Powerpoint which are included in the Microsoft Office suite.
Conclusion: use the all emcompassing Microsoft Office suite to complete your college work.

Microsoft (Office) Word is one part of Microsoft Office. Others are Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. The biggest difference you should see is that one may be the 2007 version and one might be earlier.
Note that Word 2007 by default produces .docx documents, which your online classes may not accept. To get it to produce the older .doc format, do this:
1. Click the round Office button in the upper-left corner of the window.
2. Click the Save As->Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc) menu item.
3. Save the file.
Hope that helps.

Microsoft Office is a "Suite" and contains a collection of programs, when you buy office you have several options depending on your requirement and how much you are willing to pay, the standard suite contains , Excel, PowerPoint, outlook and Word. The professional suite contains additional programs such as publisher, one-note, info-path, access etc.
A comparable suite is Lotus Notes Suite from IBM which has similar programs.

Microsoft Office is not a product. You can't write essays in it. It's a bundle containing Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Publisher, etc.
So whichever you have you're still writing your essays in Microsoft Word.
