Mac is a lot better than Linux. Linux is complicated and hard to understand. If you have to ask this question, you won't like Linux. You get a lot more support with Mac. Linux only supports the product until a new version rolls out. Then, you're on your own. Now here's the part where I get boo'd. Go with Vista. I hated it for about two months, but now that I got the hang of it, it's a whole lot better than XP, Mac, and Linux. Just make sure you turn off the Windows Search service.

Hello russluvsarcy,

Being better or worse is subjective.

When I was considering going with Linux, I attended a users group meeting. The room was filled with very smart and computer literate folks all trying to get help getting their computers to work using LInux. I've seen some great Linux programs, and I don't mean this as a put-down to this or the Linux platform, but personally, I prefer the Mac OS X.

Mac OS X uses a Unix kernel, so there is a lot of Unix ports for the Macintosh format as well as stuff programmed for the Macintosh. There's also a large open source development community for the Macintosh In addition, there are Windows ports like Microsoft Office for Mac (that will never be on Linux).

I'm a very graphics oriented guy, and frankly I've loved the Macintosh User Interface, and just the easy-to-use way of doing things. I hope that this helps. Best of luck.

I personally like Linux, but there is nothing wrong with Mac. I just learned everything I know of Unix-derivatives from Linux.

On the note of visual stuff, Linux wins by far. Full Compiz-Fusion (not just the basic stuff) is incredible, with effects and graphics far beyond any other OS. Mac is nice because of it's stability, but Compiz-Fusion is becoming stable as well. Look at the new Ubuntu 7.10, Compiz-Fusion is installed and enabled by default. I installed the advanced settings manager for it, and run the most incredible effects as defaults.

And this brings me into another aspect of Linux. It is more resource-friendly. Heavy programs like Compiz-Fusion can be handled effortlessly by linux, even on computers a few years old. And I'm not talking just desktops, but laptops, too. Now, I'm not too sure about Mac, but that's because they make it kinda hard to install on anything other than their hardware.

I'd say more, but I'm out of time. I guess I'll just settle for having argued the point of eyecandy a little bit...

Okay, I have Mac OS X 10.4 and Ubuntu 7.Something lol (Feisty Fawn).

Mac is fab because...

~There are a lot of really good programs that are compatible with it, contrary to public belief

~My grandmother can use Mac, and I (a computer person lol) get confused on Ubuntu

~Mac is just fun and friendly and enjoyable to use

However, some bad things are...

~None that I can think of...

Linux is great because...

~It comes with the full suite of programs (OpenOffice, GIMP, etc.) already loaded ad ready to use

~It is extremely flexible and modifyable

~It is all open source (most of the time)

~It has all the features that Windows and Mac don't (Workspaces, etc.)

Some bad things, however, are...

~Installing programs onto it has proven to be a challenge for me lol

~The pre-installed backgrounds are ugly! =P

If I were stranded in the woods and could only have one operating system (lol), I would still definently go for Mac.

So, yeah, that's my opinion!

This is what I can say with first hand experience.

I am SysAdmin in a UNIX/Windows environment but I have a Mac running OS X at home and I love it.

Windows blows blue frequently and UNIX/Linux sometimes simply crashes. But so far OS X keeps on ticking and taking a licking without even flicking!

Good luck and have fun in the choice you make.

macs are designed to be simple, but when you want to do something not simple, like, say, use the terminal it gets a lot more complicated than it should be. linux, on the other hand, makes everything complicated but the more complicated things are less complicated than on a mac. I hope that made some sense. I guess what I'm saying is that macs were designed to be usable by the lowest common denominator and linux was made for the people who created it.

I like linux because it's more configurable and will run on a pc, but I guess it's a matter of preference.

Mac is hardware, Linux is software. You can run Linux on a Mac, you can't run Mac within Linux.

both got pros and cons

linux got a lot of good and free programs and is a solid OS

mac on the other hand is expensive gotta buy mac computers altho you can install on pc its very slow and great for producing music and graphics. but for personal use i'd go with linux

MAC IS MUCH BETTER

mac is best desktop on planet Easth - simplest and most intuitive operating system, most beautiful os for the eyes,

tons of software, much more peripherals than for linux - just about any way you compare them mac is waaay better than linux

although mac os is linux too - it is certified as linux and at the core of mac os is actually nothing else than FreeBSD operating system and on top of that is fancy eye candy interface called Aqua
