Retain formatting in CV is not much, so LibreOffice would do nicely, that's OpenOffice.org with a name change; but anything can go.

The complicate part comes when talking about a Microsoft Word document retaining a, let's say WordArt a small utility app comes within Office and meant to embed inside a document. It was a mistake to use it to begin with if I need to comment on that.

If you have Windows, your computer comes with wordpad. Wordpad looks a lot like Word. It doesn't have 100s of different features like Word, but it will get the job done.

If you want to install a free program, and you said you just needed an alternative for Word and nothing else, then AbiWord is what most people use. That is here https://www.abisource.com/

If you think you might need one of the other programs (like a spreadsheet program (like Excel) or a slideshow program (like powerpoint), etc then Libre Office is the best free office suite program to get - it has its own version of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, https://www.libreoffice.org

Wordpad comes with windows, and is a basic subset of Word. It is plenty to write something simple like a CV, you don't need a full office suite just to write 1 or 2 pages.

LibreOffice is a free alternative to the Microsoft Office suite and can work with Word documents. Just make sure you save in Word format if you will be sharing your documents. Sometimes there are some minor formatting issues when you open Word documents, but if you fix them in LibreOffice you can generate a PDF file that will look fine for someone else and the PDF viewers are free.
