With KDE and GNOME its not so much a case of which one is better, its more a case of personal preference and which of the two suits the distro. you are using the beast.
For Example :
Linux Mint the obvious choice would be GNOME, whereas with OpenSUSE the obvious choice would be KDE.
I work with GNOME throughout with my distros.
Linux Mint 3.1 (Celena)
NO LONGER SUPPORTED
Linux Mint 4.0 (Daryna)

Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa)

At the same Xfce should not be forgotten, being an equally decent Desktop Environment.
GNOME

well every Linux user has his/her own preferences I personally love Gnome it is easier to use than KDE 3 or 4 desktop. you could install both versions and on boot up you can pick which desktop you want to use, then you will have the best of both world.
I always use Gnome
What Linux Version are you using? this can be a major factor in what desktops you can use anyway

I haven't used, but I know the difference between them...
KDE is based off of closed source software, but has a big extension list.
Gnome is open source and has the extension list also.
So it boils down to look and feel.

Kubuntu 13.10 (KDE) has come a protracted way, even because of the fact the very ordinary 12.04. it has Konsol 4.2 and makes use of the super MUON repository. it may get laptop fancy because of the fact the default is Dolphin which allows you to resize icons for my section, have as much as six computers (no longer at as quickly as) a slew of the coolest wallpapers ever and is speedy. notwithstanding it takes up 5.4GB of your HD. Ican't get it to WINE, yet i think of it may, yet no longer as properly as Mint 15 MATE (Gnome) it incredibly is my in demand Gnome. Its no longer something like Gnome. the upload ons are complicated to handle, yet it incredibly is using my inexperiience and that i've got by risk got here upon all varieties of quirky issues to thrill me. there is not any 13.10 handbook and the handbook is paltry. I purely use the KDE e book. Konsole is the Terminal emulator that makes Terminal seem ill. It takes instructions and root shape comfortably. warning: do no longer mess with Konsole or you are able to harm the equipment comfortably. Konsole is deceptively hassle-free and that's the reason i in my opinion like Terminal extra suitable. they are no longer the comparable element. KDE is not any harder to application than Gnome, purely slightly distinctive and that i think of extra relaxing. Gnome love Python and so do I. KDE loves it, too. notwithstanding it loves C++ and looks to have an afftinity for Ruby on Rails. (Ruby is easy before each thing, then gets montsrously annoying later in case you enable it get too complicated. i like Python suitable now.) the sting, to me, is going to KDE because of the fact its develpment is so fierce and it incredibly is not afraid to run the bleeding area. Gnomes choose to be ordinary and comfortable and to swap abode windows, which i like it badly to do in spades. the KDE community act like a kinfolk of pioneers form of like the Starship enterprise and its wild team. yet its packed with data's, Scotty's and Spocks and that i'm no longer able to discover Captain Jean Luc Picard or Jim Kirk. so some distance i'm in the residing room and fidgeting with my Sorian brandy. in case you decide directly to abode windows, stay with Gnome. in case you decide directly to bypass the place no one has long gone before, we will pipe you aboard the KDE deliver. Oh, suitable now Open SuSe is the winner observed with the help of Slackware and Kubuntu. and that they are, of direction, unfastened. do no longer foprget to purchase a number of their better commercial utility, a minimum of certainly one of it incredibly is 'de rigeur' for KDE.
