what does the version numbers mean in software?

i.e.: in Google Android Gingerbread the version number is 2.3 , now there is an update with the number 2.3.1 and 2.3.2

is the 2 considered the main version and the 3 sub-version and the 1 & 2 sub-sub-version??

can anyone help

That is the software version, basically for you its like getting upgraded that the software is more up to date.

The number listed first (leftmost) is the most significant number. So 2.3.1 is newer than 2.2.4958. So yes, it goes main version, sub-version, sub-sub-version. There is no other standard other than that. What each subversion means is defined by the creators of that particular piece of software. Generally changes to the top level number means a major overhaul of the look, feel, and functionality.

2.3.2 is an Update to 2.3.1

which means obviously better ( improved speed,fixed bugs...)
