Question:
Linux installation ?

I need to install Linux on my PC which already has WindowsXP. I turn on the PC with the Linux CD inside and, when the installation guide(or wizzard or else:) says that it wants to shrink partition /windows/D (it's actually /dev/sda5) and create the swap partition, the root Linux partition and partition for /home, I tell it to shrink /windows/E instead (and I adjust the other partitions accordingly).

Then an error while resizing partition E (/dev/sda6) turns out saying:

"Opening '/dev/sda6' as NTFS failed: Operation not permitted. The NTFS partition is hibernated. Windows must be resumed and turned off properly, so resizing could be done safely."

What does this mean ??? Isn't Windows already turned off, cause I power on the PC and while booting the system reads the installation CD ???

This is the first time that I try to do such a thing so.... :) help ! :)

This answer refers to the installation of Ubuntu, other flavours of Linux I am not conversant with :

Ive got XP and Ubuntu Linux running on the same drive.

Ubuntu is free as it is open source, the download link is :

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download...

You must have XP installed first. Start your PC from the Ubuntu live CD, select start or install when prompted, once the Ubuntu desktop has appeared in the top left hand corner there is an option to install, double click and the installation screen will appear.

Once Ubuntu has asked you about regional settings etc. it will then take you into the partitioning table, if you select the default setting which is on the top, Ubuntu will then automatically sort the space it needs and install its own Grub bootloader creating a dual boot scenario.

When all is installed you will then on bootup receive a message asking which operating system you wish to boot into ie: Ubuntu or Windows XP.

For further details read the link below carefully :

Hope this is useful.

Did you actually select shutdown from the Windows menu? Or did it automatically go into hibernation, and you simply shut off the power at that point?

The problem also may be that Linux cannot natively read/write to an NTFS partition. There are programs you can add later that will give Linux some ability to work with NTFS. This may have been added to recent Linux kernels, I'm not certain.

What you need to do is use a third party tool such as partition magic to resize the NTFS partition on the drive. Then install Linux.

This is either a hibernation partition, which no other OS will dare to touch, or recovery partition. Let it re-size the Windows partition, or fit another drive.
