so, I downloaded the new El Capitan for mac and it wasn't working with my university so I followed the directions to hit Command+R and erase it to get Yosemite back, and now I've lost everything on my computer. is there anyway to get my stuff back? like can I take it somewhere (there's not a mac store within 5 hours of where I live). would best buy be able to fix it? I lost 5 years worth of music, photos, papers and assignments I had written. I don't know what to do.

I personally would never take anything into Best buys Geeks They are only kids that's learning how to install iOS/x and windows when it comes to data recovery they know nothing period, there are some details that I would need to know before I could give you the right answer on how to recover your data files, Mac OS/x is developed from Free BSD operating system which I'm familiar with, If you can boot your mac up from a dv drive or USB jump/flash drive then there is a chance that you can safe all your data yourself. Below is a list of websites who's operating systems will run on Mac's What you need to do is download any or all of them, Then make what's known has a Live systems boot up disk to boot your mac up with, once it's booted up then through the file manager you would log on to your hard drive search for your music, photos and document folders and files copy each folder to a big usb jump drive, sounds like you'll need a couple of 32/64 gig drives or an external usb hard drive, Now if you have totally erased your hard drive through using Command+R then I don't hold out much chance of recovering your data files, but like they say any chance is better than no chance so it's worth trying what I'm suggesting also there is a list of Mac users forums that you can try to see if mac users can help you out, Now you have found out that there are Mac user forums and Free alternative operating systems available to you....

Use Time Machine to restore your Mac, Time Machine is the built-in backup feature of OS X. To use it, you need one of these external storage solutions. Also must install Leo Privacy Guard 3.0 app in your smart phone which is free available in iTunes, to secure your iPhone, also a battery life saver.

You clicked to agree to erase, and suddenly you regret it.

Take the computer to a data recovery specialist. Check the yellow pages for a shop near you.

Next time you have a problem with a proprietary network (uni), contact the network admin or ask another student how to connect.
