If you're upgrading from XP to Vista, if Office wasn't on your computer already, it won't be on it after you upgrade.
If you're buying a new computer that comes with Vista installed, there will most likely be a Trial version of Office, and possibly have a full version of Word, and unlikely, but still possible, have a full version of Office.

None of the Windows Vista flavors/bundles/versions contain Microsoft Office. MS-Office is 'sold separately'! Although they all come with the good old (revised) Word-pad (which you can use to view most of the text files/documents but not MS-Office files like Word). I believe there are some document 'viewers' (readers) available for free from Microsoft (for viewing Office documents like Visio, etc).
You have to either purchase MS-Office, or alternatively you may also want to take a look at open-source Office: http://www.openoffice.org/
MS-Office is available in the following flavors:
Student edition, Standard edition, Professional edition.

None of the Vista versions include Office as a component, as the Office suite or individual items such as Word are a major purchase in their own right. Just regard Office in your mind as a separate product entirely. Many supplied Vista pcs do include a *trial* version of Office 2007 and often a full version of Works. But that's up to the OEMs who make them. You can install earlier versions of Office onto Vista if you own them.

no Vista does not have Microsoft Office. But if you have a solid copy of Office from your old computer then this can be installed. if this is a brand new computer then you will need to buy the software

Some come with a 60 day free trial of Microsoft office 2007 however this will have to be purchased if you want it permanently.

No, Vista is an Operating System, Office is the software (Word etc.), and you have to buy it. You can download OpenOffice.org free from the Internet which will give you some facilities.

You will have to buy it - Basic Vista - Why????
If you want - email me and I can tell you excellent Basic Vista upgrades to make it work more like Premium version
Office 2007 is NOT (unlike below answer) on Basic - it may have Word only - not the full suite
