1. Freedom: They aren't going to be told the next version of windows will delete files from your system without you telling it to
2. Cost: A big factor: They're all free
3. Development: Because anyone in the world can add to it, and quantity really is better than quality in programming, open source is faster, more robust, and much more secure
As an example, it takes about a half hour to crack all windows passwords under 15 characters, it takes months on linux due to SHA-5, salts, wrapped passphrases and more.
On top of that, you don't need someones password to get their files on windows, you do on linux.

its free, anyone is free to do anything they want with that code, and it ushally means its of better quality or that ppl actely what to fix it rather then the crap you pay for :P
