Hello,

(ANS) No.1 I am NOT at all surprised you are thoroughly confused here, Ubuntu Linux is a 100% completely different OS and bears absolutely no! comparison to Microsoft Windows Vista.

No.2 Sorry! But you haven't done your home work here, if you had you wouldn't be on answers asking these questions.

No.3 Ubuntu Linux is a wonderful version of Linux for the desktop but it uses a HP (high performance) filing system which is NOT compatible with windows vista's NTFS filing system. This means that the two OS cannot see each other and therefore cannot smoothly or seamlessly swap files between each other.

No.4 NOP!! MS Windows software including programs like MSN WONT run on Ubuntu Linux. You have to find & install specific Linux compiled software, the setup & installers have to be specific for Linux.

No.5 Some years ago Linux was just a geeky type of operating system, an alternative to Microsoft windows but few gave it house space and what let Linux down back then was the sheer lack of major applications. Now this has radically changed, the range of good quality usable software for Linux has exploded and this makes something like Ubuntu increasingly attractive.

SEE:- Open Office for Linux, FireFox for Linux, etc.

**Sadly, Linux uses such a completely different technical language for terms, acronym's, labels and descriptions, commands, etc its quite a steep learning curve as they say. Especially for someone who has used Microsoft for many many years.

**The other thing that does tend to let linux down in contrast to MS is the access to technical support. OR should I say the difficulty or lack of easy access. This I'm certain puts off many people who would otherwise embrace linux for sure.

Kind Regards Ivan

windows user since 1989.

Linux normally uses a program manager called synaptic to install files and programs. Linux is rich in all kinds of programming software. To actually use msn you need the newest version of the Firefox web browser. As stated you would need to install wine and dos menu, but be aware you do not get the full use of Windows this way. That requires a program like Crossover which is not free.

I set my Vista dual boot, using Mint Linux because I like it's graphical user interface. Mint Linux will bring in your Windows My Document folders. Ubuntu is Gnome desktop environment, Kubuntu is a windows like environment.

If you were doing programming, you need to study it a bit more. If you bothered really learning how, you would realise that programs written for one OS do not work on others. You can NOT run Windows programs on Linux. You already have the best set of programming tools going as there are various compilers and editors built in. Start reading your documentation.

homestead windows 7 is extra straight forward than Ubuntu or Linux Mint??? -you gotta be kidding!!! homestead windows 7 could be extra consumer friendly than homestead windows Vista......i'm going to conform to that. in case you would be working video games...then homestead windows 7, or XP. in case you do not truly "choose" homestead windows, then Linux mint 9 is astounding, Mint 8 is large. Any of the ten.04 'buntu's are large- Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu.

There is an open source program called WINE, which allows you to run Windows programs under Linux.

You can also install VirtualBox in Linux and install Windows INSIDE it.
