Hello All,

I have Open Solaris Installed on my x86 system, and I want to run Windows Applications (e.g. VLC, OpenOffice, Winrar, Bittorrent, Soundforge etc.).
Could anyone suggest me how to make it possible..? Actually I don't like windows OS at all and I want to use Unix for all my aspects. That's why I would like to enjoy all those applications of Windows on my Unix based OS.
Please help ASAP.

open solaris is not linux, its unix-like and based on solaris which is unix,

openoffice should be installed by default, totem is your media player and again installed by default (if you are using the gnome desktop),

winrar and soundforge will not work on solaris, but there are alternatives, the same with bittorent (i use ktorrent as i use the kde desktop on linux)

my advice would be to try one of the linux distributions, as there is more support and application/software packages,

try pclinuxos

or mandriva

http://www2.mandriva.com/

both are free but mandriva does have a commercial version (called powerpack)

Okay, Wine has been pointed to already. There is also Madoris, which unfortunately I can't find the Home Page for on right now.

Just a point about your top statements, though. OpenOffice has a native Solaris version.

Sun released both (though Oracle is killing support for OpenSolaris).

On Linux I run unrar for winrar. Whatever your desktop there is probably an archive extractor which goes with it. Looking at the documentation will tell you what programs you need.

Bittorrent:

For the rest I don't believe Crossover Office or Cedega will work but Wine or Cedega should handle most of them -- and a lot of programs do have native Solaris support.

Oh, I don't know if you have read this article:

It's a good OS.

WINE can be used to run windows applications on non-windows operating system.

However in your case. Solaris should already have it's own versions of VLC, OpenOffice. Instead of winrar, use the zipping tool that came with Solaris. For the other applications, you're best off finding the Solaris equivalent as application performance would be much greater than an aplication running under WINE.... assuming it would even run under wine.
