Question:
What happens to my PC if I were to uninstall Apple Software Update?

On my (Windows based) computer the only Apple software I have installed are iTunes 7.0 and Apple Software Update. I am a strong believer in installing the minimal amount of software possible, hence I have ignored all of the attempts to ask me to upgrade to iTunes 7.2.

I am considering uninstalling Apple Software Update and I have two questions.
1. If I were to uninstall Apple Software Update, will this “hurt” my iTunes?
2. With Apple Software Update installed, does this result in anything that’s always running in the background?

Thanks.

apple software update runs as a service.

if you remove it all will be fine, it just takes the guesswork out of updating any apple product.

you can always manually check for updates.

it will not effect itunes.

10.4.x to 10.5.x is an UPGRADE in lieu of an update. That essentially means you would need to purchase an Mac OS that will run on your system. Dependent upon the specs of your system an upgrade maybe be to 10.5 (Leopard) or perhaps even 10.6 (Snow Leopard). You may want to try resetting VPRAM and see if that helps the white screen issue, However the best I can suggest with your system specs start checking around for an upgrade version that meets the specs of your system and thus work on it. I think Snow Leopard will run but be aware that powerpc apps and drivers will need to be available and Rosetta used for powerpc apps to run. If you do some research, you will be able to discover what all this may mean for your system as it's actually more information than can be entered. However this post offers a starting point to know what can be done and what may be needed.
