Can someone help me solve the problem of my Windows Media Player ? I installed XP Codec Pack 2.5.1 on my XP yesterday. The Media Player was able to play two AVI and MPEG files first before the system got disrupted when it tried to play one other AVI file. The screen got all messed up and I have to shut down the system and reboot it. Then the Media Player couldn't play the two AVI and MPEG files altogether. In one instance, I got error code COOD1199, saying that the Media Player can't play the file. In other instance, the display said the file is being played; but there were no audio and video outputs. It seemed fine when the Media Player tried to play some other AVI and MPEG files. I have tried to reinstall the XP Codec Pack 2.5.1. But, that isn't working either. Can someone offer me some help ?

Download Gom Player. It is the best player in the world. If you try to play a video and your computer doesn't have the codec, Gom Player offers to download it for you. It's quick and easy. Trust me, it's the best. Here's the link for the download:http://download.cnet.com/GOM-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10551786.html?part=dl-GOMMediaP&subj=dl&tag=button

Media player does not have native support for those file formats. You need to install a codec pack, other than the xp one (I know it sucks). Luckily, a codec pack can be downloaded from divx the 'maker' of the avi file format or there is also a mindows media player 9 and later codec pack from microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=507

Im not sure if WMP will accept .avi. This file type is audio and video and WMP doesn't like those kind of files. I had the same problem. It must be a Microsoft issue which is wierd because microsoft introduced .avi in 1992.

Try the K-Lite Codec Pack: http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

Standard version is fine. Then use the included Media Player Classic to play your files.

You need the right codec to play the movie.

1. Download the right codec, install it and play the movie.

2. Try VLC media player, it's free and doesn't need any codec.

I tell you if you are not a fanboy of Windows Media Player then download VLC Media Player

http://download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html

And if you are fanboy then you have to use classic media player inbuilt with K-Lite codec pack..

If you can't play avi files(excluding that 2 cause they may be corrupted) with vlc or any other except windows media then I think you need to reinstall driver for system crash...

If you are having internet connection, then try installing automatic updates.

It will solve the problem.

But I suggest you to use VLC media player.

Thanks guys for your suggestions. With so many answers, it's a bit difficult to figure out which one might be the best. I think I'll try one or more of your solutions.
