Imagine the booklet opened up in the centre - where the staples appear. Each page could be double sided therefore the cover (or 1st page) would have the cover on the front of the left hand side with the last page printed opposite it on the right - each A5 would fit the A4 then turn it over and print the other side, this time page 2 on the left and the inside rear cover to the right. Then continue the process until you have completed it and if you then put all the A4 sheets together, fold them in half, you will have your completed booklet.
Does that make sense? I hope so. :)

The easiest way, if you are using InDesign CS3, is to use InBooklet, which will show you the setup of your document in what is called Printers Spreads. These are the spreads arranged so when you print the pages two to a sheet, they line up correctly for folding and binding. Note, however, the InBooklet only shows you that setup. It does NOT save a separate copy of this "imposed" document ("imposing" is what a print shop will do to create this proper set of spreads). But you can do a File>Print to PDF to save this out in the correct setup as a PDF. You will still need to be able to print from that PDF to double-sided paper.
Printer spreads set up this way: Say you have an 8-page document plus covers. So one sheet would be front and back outside covers on one side, with front and back inside covers on the other side. The next sheet/spread would be page 1 and page 8 on one side, page 2 and page 7 on the other. And then your last sheet would be page 3 and page 6 on one side and page 4 and page 5 on the other. To put this together, the bottom sheet would be the covers, then the sheet with 1/8 and 2/7, followed by the third sheet with 3/6 and 4/5.
Hope that makes sense! I'm working on a similar project!

in indesign have 2 a4 landscape pages.
then you want to but a line in the middle of both pages, this will then give you '4 A5 pages'.
1st page on the right hand side put all the details for the cover here and on the left hand side stick your back page.
on the 2nd page put pages 2 + 3 next to each other.
Print page 1 off and then turn the paper over and put it through again to print the inside pages, then all you need to do is fold it in half and there you have your 4 pg A5 booklet

What you need to do is to set up your page layout in this fashion. Put you two A5 pages side-by-side and build up your booklet by numbering your first page as Page 1 and Page X which is your last page. Number the second page as Page 2 and Page X which is the page before the last... and so forth. When you are ready to print, print the odd pages first which can be done through your software or printer preferences. Then print out the even pages in the back of the odd pages. When you are finish to print, you will have to cut the excess white on A4 pages OR, you will have to fit the text on each page (spread it out or increase your font size).

I don't that that particular program but if it is anything like Microsoft programs, use A4 landscape orientation and create two text frames so you are actually using one sheet as two pages. I suggest however, however many pages you need to print out, get blank paper, fold the pages and number them so you know in which order to put your text etc. becaue if you look at your first page on screen, and you are printing both sides, the lefthand side of page 1 on screen, when folded would actually be the cover sheet.

I'm not sure for previous versions but for InDesign CS4, there is a "Print Booklet" option in the "File".
Nick_Manchester, that has to be the biggest waste of time I ever heard of.
If that doesn't work for you, your printer might have that option available. I have an HP and in the options there is a booklet option, and it will print it automatically.

When you print select properties when asked to select the printer and then set the printer to fit the document to the paper size. This causes the printer to shrink or expand the items to fit.
