Im pretty sure that when you upgrade it checks to see if the previous version is genuine

Yes, like the guy above me mentioned, you would indeed have to purchase the Windows Vista Basic Version. Im pretty sure Windows XP valid state is not a prerequisite for this process.

Note: Windows XP was probably an easy cookie to crack, however in this day and age Windows Vista goes through random checks on certain days through out the month to detect validity of the software, and if windows is not genuine it would surely let you know by locking you out, and unless you have a valid key, or valid Windows version to downgrade to then the laptop would be only good for a paper weight and/or door stop.

The first thing the upgrade will check is the validity of your current system and if it sees its not genuine it wont run.

Look at the site Leo gave you.

Take the text from the guy who posted as XP_Cracker and paste it into a Notebook document and save it as XP_cracker.reg then double-click it and let it run.

It'll make your copy of XP good.

Consider this an excellent time to recognize that

your operating system is defective. Why would you pay

money for something that is unreliable and slow?

I recommend replacing it with one of:

http://fedora.redhat.com

http://www.centos.org

http://www.opensuse.org

http://www.debian.org

http://www.ubuntu.org

http://www.slackware.org

http://www.freebsd.org

http://www.opensolaris.org

Any of these will be more reliable, less susceptible to

viri, uses your hardware more efficiently, and they're

all free.
