A few reasons:

1. The column is not large enough to show the number (so enlarge it)

2. A formula is missing a component

3. Divide by zero

You might need to post a screenshot or a detailed process for how you generated the problem.



Technically, -1231 DOES NOT equal that string.



It appears to be anticipating a 5 digit answer followed by repeating decimals, which makes it too long to display.



When you place the cursor on the cell, do you see the same text in the Formula line (after the = sign, towards the top) ?



Try to right click on the cell. Choose Format Cells > Number Tab >

From the list, try Number or Text.



You could also try the Alignment Tab. Towards the bottom, check the Wrap Text option.

There's not enough room in that cell to display the value. Expand the cell horizontally.
