Hello! I just downloaded Skype for my computer and I have the 2011 version of the Macbook Pro. Will it slow my computer down? And is it a safe program to run? I got it form the actual Skype website.

If you tested the download for it with a quality virus scan and found no infection, it should be fine. It will slow down your PC very slightly (all programs do). However, it shouldn't noticable really on a newer computer or any with a decent speed.

Yes Skype slows down the computer tremendously. With Skype running computer is practically unusable. Quit Skype and computer runs just fine. This is on a Windows 7 Core i3 with 6g ram.

The main issue, is that if incoming connections are not restricted by a software firewall or hardware router, Skype can relay through your system - this is where the load, and particularly network load, tends to come from There is also the possibility of being made a super-node, but that is unlikely unless your up time and connection are high and consistent.

I feel like it slows my computer down after a while but only when it's up. Like right now, it's not up and my computer is running smoothly. (I do have a different computer though).

And yes, it is safe.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
