You need to check the cd for defects.

Put in the CD, reboot your PC and select "Check CD for defects" option from the menu.

I typed "ubuntu failed xfermode" into a google search and got a whole slew of hits. Try it.

It appears to be a know issue in ubuntu, basically it fails in somewhere while setting up devices.

while booting add

irqpoll to kernel arguments list

like

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-15-generic root=UUID=48c5a348-eb39-4171-8531-671a49fdb75b ro quiet splash irqpoll

you can keep your default kernel arguments, just append irqpoll to it.
