the first thing i would is insert a flash drive or an external drive to copy and back up your files to. after do that try reinstalling your OS (windows xp). Sometimes just installing OS can fix the problem, but if it doesn't format the hard drive and reinstall. go to control panel and look at the name and brand of the parts inside your computer (go to device manager). After that try to see if your internet is working. if it is, go online and google the name of the part and type "driver". you need a driver to work the part in your computer. when you reinstall the OS (operating system) it deletes the drivers. if your internet doesn't work, try downloading the drivers on friends computer and installing them on yours. Good luck. i've had this problem too, it was annoying to fix.

Ok. Firstly I would recommend you just wipe everything and reinstall windows to take the safest route. Though it sounds like you need to recover some data so let's do that first. First you need to try to get into windows to get your old files back. Start your computer, and keep pressing F8 during the boot up sequence. You should get a menu that asks how you would like to boot into windows. Go into SAFE MODE. This will prevent most start up programs from starting and will give you basic access to windows. From there go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on SYSTEM RESTORE. From there follow the on screen instructions to restore to a point BEFORE the problems started happening. Continue through the wizard and let the system restore itself to a previous point. After this try to log into windows regularly. If you can, you may be able to write files to a CD using your burning program of choice. If you still can't access windows you will have to get your hands on a Windows XP CD with its own CD key. Before inserting it ensure that your boot sequence in your BIOS is starting with CD. To change this tap the F2 or the Del key while booting up (right in the beginning) and get into your bios. Then look through the categories for Boot Sequence or something of the sort, and make sure that it is trying to boot from the CD first. Then restart your computer with the Windows CD inside. Setup will copy some files (May require you to press any button to boot from CD, do so). During the setup you will want to delete the current partition and make a new one, this is easy, simply follow the on screen steps. Once you have decided where to install windows the installation process can begin. When installing just make sure to be around your pc to make changes during the install such as time date and network settings. From there it's all on screen instructions. Hopefully this helps. You can also try a program in the future called GoBack, I believe it's from Norton, that allows you to be moer precise with the recovery process. Hopefully this has been of some help to you, good luck.

If you can install XP pro, do so. Once installed, all of your hardware drivers should be installed by default. At that point, all of your files will be accessible to you.
