LibreOffice is better in my opinion but not by much, and Kingsoft Office shouldn't be forgotten either. I go into further detail in the video below.

The problem with explaining is that the differences are not that great. LibreOffice is in fact a fork of OpenOffice which came about out of among other things frustration with their update policies among corporate IT users. I personally find that LibreOffice uses less memory than Open Office so it is faster (though by no means fast) and more stable (which is not much of a problem with OO). It is as capable.

Just do a Google search for:

OpenOffice vs. LibreOffice

And, all will be revealed.

TIP: Of the two, Libre Office gets more Updates faster, which makes it the better choice.

I agree with ElfaGeek that you should do an internet search to see all of the differences between the two since we can't possibly lay out all of those technical differences for you. But the average user needs to know one thing: Libre Office keep a current version going, and Open Office does not. Libre Office already has written a version that will run on Win 8 so you can see how current they are. But when you open the two programs up, they look exactly alike.

LibreOffice is based on OpenOffice.org and has been substantially reworked. Between the two, I suggest LibreOffice.

openoffice is now maintained by Oracle. libreoffice is maintained by the FOSS advocates who once worked on openoffice.

To get for free LibreOffice you can just click here http://bitly.com/1rmrkb9

It is a complete mangment package that can be a great alternative to Microsoft Office, it has the same functions but it's much faster!
