SMB, server message block. It is how windows can shared access to files, printers, serial ports, and miscellaneous communications to other windows computer on the network.



There is a project called Samba that has its own version of SMB, this is basically how Linux and other Unix-based operating systems to do file and print services on a window's networks.

The Samba project/service is used on Linux systems to facilitate the SMB protocol and support Windows shares.



SMB does not stand for Samba... conversely, the Samba name was derived from the SMB acronym.
