I am in the process of finishing of my MA dissertation and am having trouble numbering pages in Word. I want on page number of the title page then numbering in the style of i, ii, iii for the next 3 pages and then (when my actual work starts) I want the numbering to start from 1 in normal numeric style and sequence.

(I'v explained that badly. Basically, my pages will go [no number]; i; ii; iii; 1; 2; 3; 4...)

Please can you help me to figure this out. Word doesn't seem to like restarting numbering hald way through a document, unless I am doing something wrong. Also, even though I don't want the title page to be considered page one, word is automatically doing this so my page i is actually showing up as page ii.

Sorry to have explained this so badly. I hope you see what I'm trying to acheive and can give me some pointers.

Cheers

A bit of housecleaning first...

Delete all the page numbers you've inserted thus far. In Word 2003 or earlier, click on File | Page Setup | Layout tab, and turn off "Different first page" and "Different odd and even". In Word 2007, click on the Page Layout tab, click on the little arrow at the bottom right corner of the Page Setup group on the Ribbon, click on the Layout tab, and turn off "Different first page" and "Different odd and even".

Insert some section breaks so that you can have different page number styles on different pages...

Insert a next-page section break (press Alt+I, B, Alt+N) between pages 1 and 2 in lieu of a manual page break. Insert a next-page section break between pages 4 and 5 in lieu of a manual page break. Now your document has three sections (page 1, pages 2-4, and 5+).

Add page numbers...

Click somewhere in section 2. In Word 2003 or earlier click on View | Header and Footer, or in Word 2007 click on Insert | Header.

On the Header and Footer toolbar, turn off "same as previous" or "link to previous" (depending on what version of Word) in the section 2 header, arrow down to the section 2 footer and turn off... , arrow down to the section 3 header and turn off... , and arrow down to the section 3 footer and turn off... .

Arrow up to the section 2 header or footer, insert small roman page numbers starting at i.

Arrow down to the section 3 header or footer, and insert normal page numbers starting at 1.

And you're done!

You've almost got it. The piece you're missing is the concept of document sections. A document can be broken into any number of sections, each with its own headers, footers and page numbering schemes and formats. Make your first page a section, your Roman numbered pages a section and your Arabic numbered pages a section.

To make a section, do the following:

1. At the top of the first page of the section, click the Insert->Breaks menu item.

2. Click Next Page under Section breaks.

3. Click OK.

Now you should be able to vary the numbering formats and starting numbers by section. You'll probably want to disassociate the first (blank) header and footer from the other so you can get rid of the number altogether.

Hope that helps.

Remove the existing page numbers. Go to the end of page 2 and choose Insert | Section Break. Go to page 3 and Inser the "i-vi" (it sounds like you know how to do this). Go to the end of page 8 and choose Insert | Section Break. Go to page 9 and Insert the page number. Note that when you are in the footer (editing the page number style and appearance), you can click a button on the toolbar to move between the sections of your document. You will have three diffierent sections...

Open Word, create your 3 pages for Roman numerical (i,ii..) .

Create and add your numbering in header/footer and add your numerical Roman number.

After done, go to go the last page, click on the page and go to menu File> Page Setup...

Click the Layout tab.

1) Set the Section Start: New page

2)Set "Headers and footers" and check the box with "different first page".

3)on Preview> Apply to: select This point forward.

Click OK to make changes.

It will create a new page. Go to the new page, add header/footer click on Page Number Format, add your page number (after inserting the auto numbering) and change back to normal numerical number and on Page numbering (in Page Number Format pop out) click "start at:" and add 1.

Click OK to make changes.

If you are confused, just mail to me.
