Question:
What are the ways to install Debian?
2010-09-25 13:29:42 UTC
Please don't forward me to other sites, I just want to know which ways I can install it. If you forward me to sites, I won't go anyway, so just tell me?
I don't have a good internet connection (and I am limited to 1Gb per month), so I can't use the internet install or anything like that.

I already have Debian (downloaded from my friend's house if you're wondering how since I have such limited internet), and if needed I have several DVD-RW, USB sticks, and Windows 7.
(if you feel too lazy to tell me how to do this, just copy and paste it)

you may not be aware that debian is not a single cd - in fact there are 31 + 7 update cd's

or

there are 5 dvd's + 1 update dvd

debian is the complete system

you can install debian using the first cd or dvd, then it will ask you for the others,

using the first dvd will give you most of your base system and a few programs,

using the first cd will give you minimal install

debian is not 'live' so you cannot test it before install

Debian comes in a few shapes and sizes as well as configurations.

But, if you have already downloaded it, you need to use an iso burner to burn it to a CD/DVD, or use a program like unetbootin to install it on a USB stick.

Once that is done, leave the disc or USB stick in your PC, and restart. You will then have to boot off of this device (each machine does this differently, you may have to go into your BIOS to change the boot order). This will then bring up the Debian installer. From here you follow the instructions. The only really tricky part is the partitioning of hard drive space, if you want to boot Debian along with Windows. Otherwise, it's pretty simple.

You have a .iso file? You will need to use a utility like ImgBurn to burn the ISO onto a dvd. You CANNOT just burn the .iso file to a disk, you need to burn it as an image using the program. .iso is similar to something like a .zip file, when you use ImgBurn, it extracts a bunch of files and burns them to the dvd.

Also, it would depend on what version you downloaded. The netinstall version is minimal, and requires you to connect to the internet to download and install everything else, if you don't, you'll just have a command line to work with.

To be honest with you, you sound like you are new to linux. You would be much better off, unless you have some absolute need for Debian, to get Ubuntu. Ubuntu is based on Debian, but focused towards new users and is much easier to use and configure than Debian is. It too is free to download, or you can order a free copy of the CD from their website, https://shipit.ubuntu.com/
