I never planned to have Norton running on any of my computers because of its space hogging features. But three years ago, I bought a refurbished laptop from a computer technician who has access to lots of software freebees including a free lifetime subscription to Norton, which he installed on my refurbished Dell when I bought it. It's the third year I'm using it, and I've never been asked to renew my subscription, so it looks like it's a real deal. Question is, it is still Norton, and still a large program. Worth keeping because it's free (until the computer breaks down), or switch to a freeware security program?

Norton is a good program. It's just a major resource monster. I used to to run it and when I uninstalled it I was shocked at how much speed my PC picked up after getting it off.

If you aren't noticing any major computer speed issues, then I see no reason to not keep using it. After all it is a free program based on what you've stated here.

norton is supposed to be a great anti virus program, and most free programs make u pay to have extra features such as ones u have to pay for have. so i meen if its free, why not keep norton.

itll most likely have much better protection, plus why would u go through all the trouble of getting a new anti virus software anyway??

Absolutely not. Microsoft Security Essentials (which also includes Defender) is free and rates very highly in comparative tests. It is whisper quiet and won't slow your computer down. I am not a Microsoft fanboy but I used to pay for ESET NOD32 on all ten of my home computers and have since completely switched to MSE and have no complaints at all.
