Sammie, If you want it as a label (not for a formula) use: "Insert/Symbol" at the end of the table (in normal text) you will find caracter 221A that seems √.

When you use the Character Map did you either double click the symbol or use the Select and Copy buttons to load the symbol to the clipboard before trying to paste into Excel? An alternative method would be to hold down the Alt Key and type in 251 using the numerical keypad. Both methods result in this √ symbol.
If you want the traditional hand written symbol with the top extension try the following:
Select the cell you want
Type 2 spaces + the underscore character any number of times needed to cover the value
Press and hold the Alt key and press Enter key
Press and hold the Alt key and type in 251 using the numerical keypad
Type in your value under the radical
Sorry but Answers strips the leading spaces from the example
__
√ 2

If you need the square root of a number, go =sqrt(number). For the symbol go to Insert, then Symbol, then on the top right select Mathematical Operators from the drop down menu, then it's right above the number 3 in a circle.

I have no idea. However in Popular Science I once saw a mathematics keyboard that had all of the symbols anyone could want on it. And another item was a plug in adjunct that allowed the symbols to be used with the regular keyboard. You might want to check into those possibilities.
