Why is windows xp crashing?

I just bought a laptop used, it has 3Gb of ram and a 300Gb hard drive.when i got it i couldnt get it to boot up so i decided to do a fresh install of xp and wipe the hard drive, the os installs relatively smoothly until the very end, gets to the final stage and says theres 6 minutes left in the install and then crashes with the blue screen. What can i do about this?

When you installed it did you have it delete the current partition, then tell it to partition it NTSF, so it installs fresh on a clean hard drive. Installing on top of an existing Windows will crash it every time.

weird . Download a linux os try that if it loads It's your copy of Xp that's the problem and ubuntu is free so there is no money spent on your part.
