Hi, I installed the Vista Transformation Pack but when I uninstalled it, everytime I turn on the computer and login it says, Windows Explorer.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. How do I fix this? I can't do anything short of reformat!

To fix it you need to put your Windows CD in and do a repair job, if this fails, then you must restore your last backup. If you did no backup, then do the following:

Download a copy of Ubuntu, and burn it to a CD, then boot the CD. You can browse and copy files for backup from your computer after booting into Ubuntu. Include all your drivers. Then do a clean XP install, and don't install any junk. Next, make a space and install Ubuntu linux, so you never have problems rebooting again. (choose XP/Ubuntu each time).

Oh, don't forget...

This is a Best Answer (5 stars please)

By the way, if you want something better than XP, you should install Ubuntu. XP is best left without the enhancements. Ubuntu offers enhancements that Windows users only dream of, and which Macintosh users are drooling over too. If you don't believe me, go look on youtube, search for 'beryl windows'.

Beryl is now upgraded to 'compiz fusion'. Well cool :P

Just keep XP to run your windows games. Keep it lean, keep it basic - it's most stable when it's kept clean, just add the updates.

I have a guess.

Explorer is the program that runs the desktop and taskbar and start menu. Maybe you uninstalled the Vista transformation pack and explorer is still trying to display it's theme or wallpaper or something.

You can hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and open task manager, then hit file - new task to run programs. Do this and enter 'Control' in the run box. Hopefully this will open control panel.

Go to the display applet and try to set everything to a setting that is good. Wallpaper and themes and such.

Hope this helps.

You might also try to copy and paste this into the run box:

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

That's system restore, maybe go back to a time before you had this problem.

Did you create a System Restore point prior to installing VTP, as it is not unusual for VTP to foul up the registry. Try a System Restore back to just before you installed VTP.

You could also try a repair installation using your XP disc.

Good luck.
