I downloaded 2 programs, AnimatorDV and Anisazi, and they both didnt work how I wanted so I got Stopmotion Station. This one worked out perfectly, but then I had to turn this stop motion into a video file. so, on the Stopmotion Station website it recommended that I get Virtual Dub Mod. So once I downloaded it and tried it out, I started having a problems. My stop motion is about 445 frames long, but when I went to open video file and picked the first frame, it only picked 55 of them! So I tried picking a frame from a different section, and then it only picked a few from in there (about 30 or so). Why wont it let me turn the whole thing into a video file?!?!

What was wrong with AnimatorDV? Remember, you need to input the code from the website after downloading and installing to get it to work. I was able to install it just fine.

Virtual Dub is a general video editing program. Don't use Virtual Dub to actually shoot or compile your animation together. You should use a program specifically designed for stop-motion animation purposes to actually compile your movie, then edit your larger clips afterwards in a video editing program like Virtual Dub or Windows Movie Maker. An animation program will make it easier to arrange, re-arrange, add and delete single frames. Typically, playing around with multiple single frames is kind of difficult and bothersome in video editors since they weren't designed with frame by frame animation as a primary function in mind.

To actually frame-grab and compile the movie, I'd suggest using Monkeyjam if you're on a PC. It's free.

Don't forget to copy the code off the website and input it into the program after installing!

If you're on a Mac, you could try Framethief or FramebyFrame.

You can also check out this website for other stop motion animation programs; some free, some retail. I haven't used any of them (other than Stop Motion Pro) so I couldn't tell you if the rest of their features were any good or not, but at least it gives you other options.

For any specific questions, you should check out http://www.stopmotionanimation.com

It's a message board filled with stop motion animators helping eachother out. They even have a handbook section that has basic answers and info on a variety of stop motion topics (armatures, sets, cameras, etc)

Here are some online resources about the basic principles of animation. These principles can and should be applied to any genre or medium you choose to work in, whether that be drawn, CGI, or stop motion animation.
