I have microsoft windows 7 pro 64 bit.

I have windows movie maker 2.6 ( i prefer it to the new 1)

I have used the same actual file before.....but when i import an .avi file to the timeline

the program closes and says Windows Movie Maker has stopped working correctly and it Windows will now close the program and report it of there is a solution.

I have already tried Windows Compatibility Mode , doing all my windows updates & restarting the pc.

It works like a charm on my WMM 2.6 on W 7 Ultimate. (XP uses WMM 2.1). I doubt that WMM is causing this problem, does WMM crash if you import a ".wmv" file you created yourself???

And Windows LIVE Movie Maker 2011 is NOT the latest version of WMM, it's an entirely different program, and it's PURE junk, in my experience.

My best guess your AVI files may be corrupted, contain DRM, or be COPY-Protected. Try to download other non-copy-protected ".avi" files from a few different websites. And then, try to play them in Windows Media Center, or Windows Media Player, first. OR, try to convert your problem file to ".wmv" file format, your Converter App should tell you if the file is damaged / Protected in any way.

Easy answer: you prefered movie maker 2.6 and not the windows live moviemaker.ink on your windows 7 64 bit. Don't you know that moviemaker 2.6 is only for xp? It will never work on windows7. You have to use the original windows live movie maker for w7. Now it is because you try to install that program on your windows software and they are not compatible, than you make your program crash. therefore it is not windows, not microsoft, not your pc, but you that makes the program crash. Get rid of that movie maker and use the moviemaker that is develloped for you Operating System, then you can use your avi files.

Hey there,

I found a free download of Windows Movie Maker here http://j.mp/1lON5tz

It's the best software of its kind.

Good Bye
