Question:
World Math Day Competition - Server Error?
2008-03-04 03:50:20 UTC
Is there any of you who also have the same problem as me? I couldn't play it and the screen says server error and 'server is too busy'. I've tried it both in Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer an it didn't work. My friend just called me and she said she had the same problem as well. And more importantly I saw a huge decline in number of 'mathletes' online. From 18,000 to 7,000 in just 30 minutes.

Anybody has the solution?

Wait until the servers less busy, resources are running too high on it and the drop in traffic suggests the owner of the servers doing something about it by cutting down connections, go on at night or something. Or you could ring them and advice them to get F5 big-ip load balancers for managing the traffic, I'd probably just wait though...

I'm getting the same problem as well; trying to log my son on to the site to practice and the server is too busy, which means... well, everyone around the world is logging on to the site at the same time! Funny, you think that the people who build this site would realize that traffic might be an issue.

I wonder what will happen tomorrow in school when they try to compete in computer lab?

These two are pretty close. Most serverside programs have a maximum connection limit, when that limit is met it wont let you connect until a slot frees up.

When someone connects to a server on a port (say port 80), it sends your computer a command to switch to a "passive port", which is usually way above the reserved ports, when port 80 has so many active redirects active it wont allow any more.

This would indicate the the server is under extreme load, mean that there are so many people trying to connect the the process that accepts http connections has died.

Hopefully there server admins are aware of this and are trying to restart the service.
