Cannot delete folder "Access is denied"?

I'm trying to delete a folder on my Windows XP, but it won't delete. Instead, I get an error box reading "Cannot delete folder: access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use." Then I have the option to hit "OK." I try again, but nothing helps. I've tried Googling stuff, and the menu I get when right-clicking on it doesn't have the "take ownership" tool. What do I do to just get the folder to the Recycle Bin? HELP!

Depends what is contained in the folder, you don't want to be deleting critical window files. Take a look at the files in the folder and bring up your task manager (ctrl+alt+del) look under the processes that could be running and compare them to the files in the folder you're trying to delete. If you see any process running then click on it and select "end process/task" then see if you can delete the folder.

If not you can use this program that might be able to "unlock" it for you so you can delete it:

But again, make sure you're not deleting any folder that you shouldn't be. If you want to un-install something use control panel/add remove programs.

-hope this helps!!

It depends on the folder your trying to delete. Did you manually create this folder or is it a folder Windows created as part of a program installation? If the folder is either a hidden folder or a system folder, it should not be deleted unless you understand what the consequences can be and directed to by a professional.

Either way, there is a program that i use for such things, it's called, Empty Loop "Unlocker" (by Cedric ' Nitch' Collumb). This program works wonders for this type of issue and i recommend it for responsible users. It's also free and clean of malware.

1 FIle or folder is open 2 you are not logged in as Administrator three Disk constitution is corrupt ( are trying chkdsk / Scandisk ) four File is having method attribute and you may also not have ample authority. 5 file / folder locking program is mounted and stopping it. 6 investigate for Malware.
